Critic Reviews for Central Park Season 1

A glorious gift for comedy and musical fans and, well, everyone.

May 27, 2020 | Full Review…

Central Park's songs are so infectious that the show's areas for improvement were really only apparent well after I'd stopped watching each episode.

May 27, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Even as the show is still honing its particular version of New York City four episodes in, its characters are generally sharp and funny enough to keep it zipping along in the meantime.

May 26, 2020 | Full Review…

Central Park, however, is an ambitious endeavor that is both very pleasant and and still finding its equilibrium within its first four episodes.

It's Broadway al fresco as this exuberant animated comedy set in New York's Central Park busts out big musical numbers for the most mundane goings-on.

Jul 1, 2020 | Full Review…

Though sometimes too overstuffed for its own good, Central Park is much like a stroll through a park on an Autumn afternoon.

May 27, 2020 | Full Review…

Central Park really finds itself in episode three, and I feel there is just no stopping it after that. This fun animated musical comedy is just as genius as it is absurd.

May 27, 2020 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Bouchard's back to basics animation dashes through the storyline with over-zealous ambition, and some of the characters indecisiveness comes across like they are on speed.

Jul 8, 2020 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

Overall, I'm intrigued. Central Park is charming, cheeky, and just plain fun.

Jun 29, 2020 | Full Review…

Fun animated musical comedy is both sweet and edgy.

Jun 18, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The key is the vitality that the musical selection brings to a comedy that is already full of optimism and entertains while it addresses serious issues. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's a ridiculously starry cast... and promises to be the most joyful 25 minutes of your week, being just the right side of silly - which is "too silly," obviously.

Audience Reviews for Central Park: Season 1

Yikes at that casting. Half the fun of Bob's Burgers but just as cringey casting choices. At least Bob's was actually humorous and even pretty cool. I like that Lauren Bouchard channelled all their yearning for musicals in this one the way they tried so desperately hard at ‘Bob's Burgers' (and it's usually a hit than a miss!) despite losing more than half the morbid, comedic substance of ‘Bob's. It sits at an awkward place between being a bit juvenile yet too mature for kids who might appreciate it. The funny villain schtick is too reminiscent of cute, old Disney or Nickelodeon plots but they tried too hard to inject a similar type of humour that worked for ‘Bob's' but merely placed itself at an awkward position in its attempt. Despite all that, ‘Central Park' is definitely charming and wholesome and sometimes even slightly funny in a "meh, it passed time" kind of way—points to anyone looking for more musicals in their adult animation.

The show is definitely an acquired taste, so if you enjoyed Bob's Burgers like I did, its a major gamble if you'll enjoy Central Park or dread sitting through an entire episode.

I love Bob's Burgers and I love musicals so I was really excited about this show! But it just didn't really click for me. It's all a bit to clean and cookie cutter to grab you. In Bob's Burgers, every character is a funny caricature, but here they're all just normal people. The cartoon side of it is not cartoony enough to be laugh out loud funny, and the musical numbers aren't good enough to make up for it. Also the narrator is annoying and having a narrator is lazy storytelling. I hope they manage to turn it around for the second season though, there's definitely a lot of potential there.

no voids, no holes but just not entertaining.
  • Aug 15, 2020
So fun, funny, and sweetly short for each episode. Catchy songs with all the right voices performed in all the right contexts. Immensely entertained and learned a few unseen managerial aspects of the beloved Central Park too. Nostalgic.

If you're not a fan of musicals, I don't recommend this show. Now that I got that out of the way... The voice talent, song writing, and animation in this show is absolutely incredible. For anyone that does appreciate musicals, this show is for you.

Too munch singing and not very funny.
  • Jul 24, 2020
The jingles of bobs burgers were a fun accent from time to time, but in this series they break into song & dance every two seconds. The musical numbers really derail from the already dull narrative. All of which could be easily forgiven if the songs added any substance to the storyline, but it's all just noise & filler.
  • Jul 20, 2020
Incredibly boring. I was constantly wondering why this was an animated show, when nothing happens that couldn't have been done in live action. The most fantastical element (in the first three or four episodes that I managed to sit through) was a character wearing a hat with a fake cloud that rained into the brim. The characters are all one-dimensional and uninteresting. And the musical numbers (although sometimes catchy) come out of nowhere and don't progress the story forward, so even if you like the song you find yourself debating wether to skip forward to make them get on with the show. Josh Gad's character is interesting in his unusualness, so it's sad they don't give him anything to do besides telling us things we already know or are going to find out without him anyway.

Top notch animation, excellent voice work, compelling story, CATCHY music (the songs are all brilliant and varied) all add up to the best animated series of 2020. A must watch.
