Critics Consensus

Though Fargo's ambitious fourth season struggles to maintain momentum, fine performances and a change of scenery make for an engaging -- if uneven -- departure from the series' norm.

Critic Reviews for Fargo Season 4

All Critics (44) | Top Critics (20)

Series creator Noah Hawley has come up with yet another ambitious, dazzling, and entertaining season of his Coen brothers-based anthology series, this time with a story that brings in themes of racism, assimilation, and the fraught promise of America.

If all of this sounds like a lot of strands to tie together, it is-but unlike in previous seasons, many of these strands really feel ancillary to the gangland drama that stodgily occupies center stage.

Fargo, as in past seasons, manages to be both more dramatic, and more comic, than almost any other show on TV right now.

Fargo has always been a little off-kilter, but those elements stand out as particularly indulgent or egregious this season, when its overall storytelling approach is so uneven.

You practically need a map, the series is so all over the place. But frustrations and all, it's a journey worth taking.

Another exemplary cast elevates wordless gestures and already witty lines into exciting entertainment, with Jessie Buckley and Glynn Turman being the overall breakouts, but this version of Fargo feels bleaker than any that preceded it.

While Hawley's effort is admirable, and the performances from the cast keep the show at least watchable, most of what happens throughout the season, unfortunately, feels monotone.

Thanks to solid writing and a fantastic cast, all of the major characters are well defined and have a presence that helps the audience feel invested right away.

It is ambitious, slick, and ponderous, carefully lining up dominoes for a spectacular collapse, but never illuminating anything a student of the gangster epics doesn't already know.

Fargo is Fargo; you'll get excellent and unexpected performances, a lot of quirk, a lot of violence, and a lot of fascinating side stories.

Audience Reviews for Fargo: Season 4

As a genuine follower since the beginning and huge fan of seasons 1 through 3, this number 4 had the quality of Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars. Why the racial issue and not the great murder mystery written like before? I'm sorry Chris Rock. You're an amazing comedien and individual but not a dramatic actor in this role. So far it sucks. When did Fargo lose it Fargoism? Uninteresting and so far unforgettable in a negative way. I'm somewhat disappointed so far and don't think I'll bother with the rest of the season as it doesn't look like it'll come together soon. Too bad as I was very much looking forward to this next chapter. Ah ya ok!

Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman are terribly missed cast. I have recommended Fargo to numerous friends and waited so long for season 4 to come out because a lot of people have not watched the Fargo series. Season 2 is perhaps one of the greatest TV series I have ever watched. Unfortunately season 4 makes me embarrassed that I told people I like to watch this series. Every one of them and there's been more than 20 has told me how bad the show is I try to play with them and say please go watch season 2 it's excellent but I can't even get them to do that now because season 4 is so bad. Chris Rock is terrible no one fears him as a character he should have been playing the doctor role if anything and gets shot and that would be the end of him great Schwartzman should have been playing the kid that got traded role rather than a tough guy role because he's horrible as well the one to bright spots of the whole series season 4 all the nurse character and the young daughter character they're both very well played and I feel both have a bright future but unfortunately they are drowned out by the disgusting performances of rock and Schwartzman and I don't even think I can watch the rest of it I'm so disappointed and sad.

Just boring. Acting is mediocre at best. Just a dumb mob show. I get the mob was always an element but this is basically trying to be The Godfather. Snooze fest.

I absolutely love Fargo and this season included Chris Rock...wow, what's not to love? Man I am so disappointed so far. I am really trying to get through the season but there is an overwhelming amount of racial overtones. They are pushing the narrative way too hard and it is quite frustrating and distracting and honestly hard to buy at times. The basic storyline is kind of hard to believe at times and its really too bad because I was very excited for this season. Man...it's far from great

This season is one of the most intriguing yet! Jamie Fox is stellar and Andrew Bird is fantastic!

The performance by Chris Rock is phenomenal but can't outshine the unnecessarily stylized story, terrible music, bizarre directing choices, and slow pacing.

Lookin 4 something I can savour about this season, but no dice. Wth the exception of a few quirky side-characters there's nothing compelling me to watch the next episode. I will concede the from out of town Sherrif and Chris Rocks partner/ OG do gr8 acting in this, as well as the nurse. But I don't get how this even ties to Fargo at all.

Disappointing departure from the Fargo formula. The quirk and the comedy are missing as the story meanders along a reasonably typical path. Chris Rock is sub par which is very disappointing because he has taken a key role that could have been given to a more deserving actor of color. Hopefully season five will return to typical Fargo roots and engage us in its' wonderfully lighthearted and quirky manner as it wanders through a valley of carnage.

suffers from miscasting (rock and schwartzman)

Fargo 4 takes us on a journey unexpected, a strangely twisted road, into the past the now the future, the living the dead, even where time stands still. It's so compelling, so intimate, you can't help but let your heart and mind wander, timelessly. Deliciously nuanced characters. Great story telling. 5 stars from me!
