News & Interviews for Marvel's Helstrom: Season 1
In the first five episodes made available to press, a general lack of focus prevails, as those plot threads and others keep piling up and unspooling without intersecting.
Now lacking a 'Marvel Originals' moniker, Helstrom is missing clear stakes and intriguing characters, too.
It's moody and ominous but superficially. There are glimpses of something more compelling buried in the usual, but the show hasn't found its footing or identity yet.
Given that Helstrom is already the last piece of a TV administration Marvel has moved away from, nothing here is good enough to make an investment in. Check out CBS' actually clever, actually scary Evil instead.
There isn't anything inherently objectionable about it. It simply comes off feeling a lot blander than something like this should.
In the end, there's nothing that's wrong with Helstrom that couldn't have been fixed with a little more attention and care... Helstrom has its charms, but all these small problems combine to make it a frustrating watch.
Hulu's Helstrom keeps its focus too firmly set on the rearview mirror.
The implementation of horror and supernatural elements usually works best when it's in examination of the human condition and Helstrom fails in its refusal to do that.
With its formulaic plot, low stakes and plodding pace, Helstrom fails to connect as a family drama or a supernatural horror adventure. The series is a true wasted opportunity to take a deeper dive into the scarier side of the Marvel Universe.
Tonewise, Helstrom is a dark thriller with plenty of supernatural touches, but it also pokes fun at supernatural stuff. There are gallows humor and sarcasm in plentiful supply, along with a strong sense of world-weariness.
Audience Reviews for Marvel's Helstrom: Season 1
Jun 04, 2021While Helstrom struggles to balance all the elements from its lore together and has protagonists that aren't as compelling as other Marvel protagonists not helped by their underwhelming performances (the sister gets it worse given her bitchy attitude whereas the brother is at least trying; he at least gets along well with the novitiate), this seemingly non-canon parting gift from the MCU's non-Disney+ television side (for context, it was predicted to be DOA due to real-life circumstances causing Marvel Television to be merged with Marvel Studios and this show being too far into development for the plug to be pulled on it) has strong special effects, a beautiful visual style that reminded me of The Ring, solid performances from the supporting cast and well-directed moments of telepathic supernatural badassery. The result? A somewhat somber, if forgettable, look at what could have been.
Apr 14, 2021We need season 2! You can't leave the end like this.
Mar 25, 2021The critics who got this thing cancelled are on my anti-holiday card list.
Feb 25, 2021Well, as a horror genre fan, i was excited to see this show, also i′m huge fan what marvel does. I knew this show is not made by Marvel studios per se, but with all of that i was exciting ( a little bit at least) for this show. So here in Spain we got Helstrom by Star on Disney+, so recently i saw the first 2 episodes. That′s my opinion right now, after look the first 2 episodes: My expectations were low and this episodes suprise me a lot. Especially the main character, who′s playing by Tom Austen. I really like it. The atmosphere as well was very spooky in a good way. The second episode was my favourite so far, i love it. I can′t wait to see the others episodes. Really really suprised.

Feb 10, 2021Need a season 2 ASAP
Jan 31, 2021They could have wrapped up the story in fewer episodes. The cast lacked chemistry and the acting was flat. I found myself not caring what happened to any of them, just wanted it to end, especially the last 3-4 episodes. I feel that it had potential that just wasn't realized.
Jan 25, 2021Great show! I had no idea what to expect going in and almost skipped it but I'm so glad I decided to give it a shot. The scenes with the mother are so cool. She plays that part so wonderfully. Hoping for a 2nd season
Jan 01, 2021If you are a fan of the show Supernatural and love the show well Helstrom is a Home Run. The visuals are amazing and a really good storyline plus some familiar faces supernatural fans will be shocked to see. Let's hope someone sees the potential of this show and pick it back up for season 2.
Dec 28, 2020The storyline was great, but the pace of character development and timing was a bit off. It is understandable given the number of protagonists and elements needed to build the story for those who are not familiar with the original comic book series. The effort may have diluted the presentation of the two main characters. But, there is still a bit of a hook within the plot to keep one engaged. I am disappointed it was not picked up for another season.
