Critic Reviews for Love, Victor Season 1

Despite the differences between their leads, Love, Victor conforms exactly to the narrative shape and modest, crowd-pleasing ambitions of the film that preceded it.

Love, Victor [is] easily digestible and solidly entertaining yet lacking.

All told, Love, Victor ambles along, deliberately bland and pleasantly toothless. Having seen the whole season, it's completely appropriate for its young adult audience and therefore downright ridiculous that Disney Plus punted Love, Victor to Hulu.

There are much better TV seasons involving gay teens figuring out when, how, and why to speak their truth to the people they love, but this one's heart is largely in the right place, and sometimes, sincerity's enough.

The show's episodic sitcom rhythms allow for an easier access point to the narrative about identity and prejudice.

Although groundbreaking in and of itself in many way, Victor's story is most special because of how normally the show treats it and its charismatic and adorable title character. There's just so much here to love.

Anyone who may have thought Simon a bit schmaltzy may cringe at Victor's "Afterschool Special" tendencies.

Though it doesn't take as many bold chances as I'd hoped it would, Love, Victor does still possess an undeniable charm.

On the whole, Love, Victor is an easy, breezy romcom that makes for a delightful weekend binge. The romantic tropes are well trod and Love, Victor deploys them charmingly.

Love, Victor makes the same important point that Love, Simon did, which is why so many rallied so passionately around the film...

Love, Victor winds a well-acted trip through bittersweet teenage drama and romance.

There's still a lot of joy to be found throughout. It's fun and moving, binge-able and genuine, poignant and funny -everything you could possibly ask for from a coming-of-age show. Just don't expect too much though.

uma série incrivel e se tronou umas das melhores tvshows teens de 2020. Ameiii

Let's start this review by complimenting the writers and actors of this show: they have done an absolutely incredible job, and I would like to thank them here for their work. Although I loved "Love, Simon", I was craving for something more, preferably a tv series where there would be more room for character development/growth - so: seeing the 'finding out (and accepting) who you truly are/coming-out'struggle unfold in believable and tiny, well-paced steps - and one that would be better in conveying how difficult this can be (depending on the personal circumstances of the individual in question and the society wherein he/she lives). Getting this right from a writer standpoint is extremely hard, especially since there are a lot of things to consider in making this kind of series. Is it perfect? No. Is is better than "Love, Simon"? Yes, definitely. They managed to strike the right balance: not too slow & not too fast, not too unbelievable, not too over-the-top or stereotypical, and definitely not one-dimensional. The story has many layers, and a lot of effort is put in to develop not only the titular character, but also all side characters. This is one of the aspects I especially liked about this show: all characters felt sufficiently 'real' (although I was somewhat worried beforehand, the writers really managed to avoid the common pitfall of leaving side-characters either flat/card-board characters or falling for cheap stereotypes), and all got their own respective attention/story. All in all, the world of "Love, Simon" felt a lot more real and believable here, a world I cannot get enough of if the writing and acting quality remains this high. + Great acting performances of all characters, although I have to mention Michael Cimino separately here. The casting of the lead character (Victor Salazar) is perfect since this actor is an absolute joy to watch: he is able to credibly display the whole range of emotions, and there is always a cheeky smile for us as audience to enjoy. If he is in frame, the sun starts the shine, and this really contributes to getting invested in the character; + Multidimensional show, not 'just' a gay coming-out series but also contains well-written subplots involving Victor's parents Armando and Isabel, his sister Pilar, his friends Felix, Mia, and Lake, his basketball teammate Andrew, and his co-worker Benji; + Better displays the struggle coming out can be, here from the angle of religion and machismo in the Latino-American world (although this is not fully explored yet in this season, hopefully more in the next); + Cuteness overload, the writers succeeded in making a feel-good show, despite the difficulties all characters (esp. the titular character) are going through; + Good music and score; - A bit on the safe, prudish side. Understandable, but to really make a mark this series needs a little more.

This is the best serie in 2020 by far! Love, Victor is funny, necessary and adorable, I can't wait for the next season!

I honestly loved this season. There are a lot of cringe moments but its honestly so funny when that happens and I love it when that happens cause I'm just like "ahhhh HAHAHAHA" that sort of thing. I honestly recommend this show for people who love watching movies or shows that are about high school drama, family drama, and about people finding out who they are and who they wanna be (gay, trans, etc). But I have nothing wrong with this show I think in the second season they should have Mia I think that's her name, understand and listen to where victor is coming from and to understand that he is gay and that they should stay friends. I just honestly love the show and I love how Simon came apart of this whole thing and they should continue that in the next season and Simon and victor should hang out more. (Sorry if I spoiled some part of the show)

It is amazing. 10/10. And the problems it touches are really strong. Reccomend everyone watching it !

Ion like this show not one bit. I was so bored with the main character and his family and his friends and the love triangle that turned in to an octagon and then some over the course of the show. This show is supposed to be about this kid who is queer and has a less than accepting environment in which to explore and possibly reveal his sexuality. Instead i get 7 straight plot-lines sprouting and not a thing but another gay guy with a girl who he doesn't like like that and then she gets hurt because he finally acts on his gayness... but wait she was into this other guy this whole time so it doesn't even really matter. Not to mention that they were all spot on drama cliche characters. I would've give .5 stars but Pilar is worth at least a point and Felix wasn't that bad. Overall i only made it to episode seven and then i couldn't take it anymore.

As someone who's been through Victor's jorney of self-discovery, this show really hit hard because of how relatable the characters are. This series also showed the cringey parts of high school that is worth noting. A lot of the nuances resonated with me a lot too and for sure people in the LGBT community will too. Overall, the acting, plot, and context made it a lot more relatable than Love, Simon.

It is a cute show, tries a little to hard to be relatable and authentic but it works. A decent teen show needed in this day and age.
