Season 1
Marvel's Helstrom

Critics Consensus

Helstrom's strong visual effects can't save it from the fact that it's characters simply aren't interesting enough to overcome their familiar setting.

Critic Reviews for Marvel's Helstrom Season 1

All Critics (26) | Top Critics (6)

In the first five episodes made available to press, a general lack of focus prevails, as those plot threads and others keep piling up and unspooling without intersecting.

Now lacking a 'Marvel Originals' moniker, Helstrom is missing clear stakes and intriguing characters, too.

Oct 15, 2020 | Full Review…

Given that Helstrom is already the last piece of a TV administration Marvel has moved away from, nothing here is good enough to make an investment in. Check out CBS' actually clever, actually scary Evil instead.

There isn't anything inherently objectionable about it. It simply comes off feeling a lot blander than something like this should.

Oct 23, 2020 | Rating: 2.75/5 | Full Review…

It's moody and ominous but superficially. There are glimpses of something more compelling buried in the usual, but the show hasn't found its footing or identity yet.

In the end, there's nothing that's wrong with Helstrom that couldn't have been fixed with a little more attention and care... Helstrom has its charms, but all these small problems combine to make it a frustrating watch.

Hulu's Helstrom keeps its focus too firmly set on the rearview mirror.

Oct 20, 2020 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

The implementation of horror and supernatural elements usually works best when it's in examination of the human condition and Helstrom fails in its refusal to do that.

Oct 19, 2020 | Full Review…

With its formulaic plot, low stakes and plodding pace, Helstrom fails to connect as a family drama or a supernatural horror adventure. The series is a true wasted opportunity to take a deeper dive into the scarier side of the Marvel Universe.

A bland last gasp for Marvel Television.

Oct 19, 2020 | Full Review…

Tonewise, Helstrom is a dark thriller with plenty of supernatural touches, but it also pokes fun at supernatural stuff. There are gallows humor and sarcasm in plentiful supply, along with a strong sense of world-weariness.

Though the family dynamics give Helstrom its emotional weight, the overarching mythology is what keeps you intrigued.

Audience Reviews for Marvel's Helstrom: Season 1

A good show! Its challenging and dark themes aren't for everyone. The family members are interesting and well acted. The only flaw is straying to far from its comic origins. Occult investigation is a much more robust occupation than just being a demon hunter. Also, im not happy with Marvel's objection to explore theology. Daimen without the proper chest scar is a classic Hollywood mistake. Overall, a tasty and dark treat!

I liked it a lot, nice storyline.... Watched the whole thing in 3 days and can't wait for season 2

loved the suspense, action, and the thrill and the drama ^_^

Helstrom is such a great show for fans of supernatural (not just the tv show but the genre). Like that how it shows with Damion that it is not just genetics (his father demon genetics from where he got his powers) but he still has free will to make the choice to not kill unless he is attacked. Also that who you think are the good guys can get so obsessed that at times are not good anymore. Marvel/Hulu PLEASE give us a 2nd season!!

This is what Supernatural would of been, if it were given to a less censored network. This show NEEDS to be renewed. I love the heavy story telling, the imagery, I am obsessed. I have never come on here before to write a review. Seeing the poor ratings made me feel compelled to say that critics are wrong. Everything they do is so effortless. I love that the female lead, Ana is queer. You don't even pay attention to her sexuality. Also, She is a confident badass. I wish I had her to watch as a teenager. Someone to show me that women can fight back and handle themselves. I put money on her in a fight any day. We need more shows like this. The cast is dynamic. Praise for Mother, she is truly unsettling to watch. This is deserving of another season. I'm begging you to give it a chance.

The actors portrayed the characters as nearly devoid of emotion but it allowed them greater range to build as the series moved on. It is slow to start but especially during these covid times is one of the more interesting shows out there and shows promise is it is allowed to continue.

Absolutely phenomenal. I created an account just to give this a good rating. I have a couple more episodes to go and I have loved every episode. I read an article that there's a chance they won't do season 2. I'm so tired and angry that so many good shows get cancelled over something petty and stupid. I know the seasons gonna end on a cliff hanger and i think it's totally unfair to all the fans to not bring it back. I was a huge fan of the show "The Exorcist" that shows season 2 ended on a major cliff hanger and yet they screwed the fans. I'm still hurt over that and I DO not want to see it happen to another great show. The acting; graphics and story/plot are so addicting in Helstrom. I will write Hulu and beg them to find a way to keep it going!

It has a very interesting beginning and instead of improving with the passing of the episodes, the plot becomes a bit flat. It entertains, but does not amaze.
  • Nov 03, 2020
Awesome series!! I couldn't stop watching! I hope there is a season 2
  • Nov 03, 2020
I personally think it's way better than Runaways and Cloak & Dagger from the same ABC Signature Studios. There's obviously some flaws like useless chitchats and even awkward bed scene, but the amount of it is less than the 2 series I've mention before made. The amount of the scare jumps are enough, not too much for a series that aren't made to be so horror. Suitable to be watch with the family, except the 9th episode with that bed scene. The mysterious figure and next step is pretty much make me will want to wait for the second season, but hopefully that saying "sequel is never better than the original" won't happen.
