Star Trek: Discovery

Critics Consensus

With less canonical baggage and a welcome dose of character development, Discovery continues to forge its own path and is narratively all the better for it.

The expansive visuals of the first episode begin to retreat into more familiar territory, but the emotions end up riding even higher, especially by the end of Episode 4.

It's finally able to grow, unfettered by entrenched canon or unnecessary blockbuster aspirations (or unnecessary white guys - did y'all even see one this week?), into a series that will succeed or fail as a Star Trek show on its own merits.

Oct 22, 2020 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Despite a premiere that augurs poorly for its broader narrative arc, Discovery's third season at least momentarily succeeds in thinking about undiscovered things to come.

Oct 22, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

This isn't even a bad set-up for a season-long arc, it's just so quick to assume we'll automatically care that it doesn't bother explaining why it matters.

We're happy to be back in this world and the new status quo finally frees the show up from the continuity issues that plagued it from its conception.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 1 was strangely slow and surprisingly humorous.

Oct 13, 2020 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Based on the first few episodes, it looks to be a satisfying and resonant journey for anyone choosing to embark on it with them.

Oct 24, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Star Trek Discovery looks and sounds as good as it ever has.

Oct 22, 2020 | Rating: 9/10 | Full Review…

I love that Michael has absolutely no chill about being a time traveler. She barely tries to hide it.

Oct 22, 2020 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

The new season of Star Trek: Discovery is significantly bolder. In fact, opening episode "That Hope is You, Part 1" throws out so much of what's recognisable about the franchise that it feels like a fresh start. It's Trek, Jim, but not as we know it.

Oct 22, 2020 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Personally, I'm not quite sure that Discovery is able to stick to one idea long enough to do it justice. In the end, that could be this series' final frontier.

Oct 22, 2020 | Full Review…

I'll fully admit that, as a fan of the first season of Discovery, I miss the pedal-to-the-metal, go for broke nature of those episodes. But that said, that sort of breakneck pace might feel exhausting to watch in the current moment.

terrible. If I could give it 0 stars I would. I watched seasons 1&2 to the end but this I watched one episode and it's just awful.
  • Nov 18, 2020
Okay if the premise for this season is "all dilithium exploded at once" and only Discovery can bring back the Federation spirit ... well we're good to go!
  • Nov 14, 2020
It seems like someone wants to get an oscar and decided to put as much tokens as possible in this series. As a result we have bad acting, out of place dialogs and general cringe. The overall story has a potential but you have to grind your teeth and swallow the cringe from time to time. SFX and other aspects are like in every other series - so nothing special.
  • Nov 13, 2020
Massive improvement over the first two seasons lacklustre start, feels much more like previous iterations of trek. Finally started pushing a positive vision of the future over the gritty dystopian themes of the first and second seasons, entirely out of place with the core ethos of the universe.
  • Nov 13, 2020
Star Trick used to be about leadership, philosophy, and teamwork to face logical issues and come up with surprising solutions that made sense. now it's about empowering a lead female character to discard direct orders and destroy the story and the ideas that made this show great in the past, this kind of empowerment is destroying legends. if you want to empower a character don't give it an irritating character, or superpowers, just make it clever, make it good to others, make it follow orders but solve issues that no one thought off, that's a lead character that sacrifice, not a lead character that is always angry and irritating.

They ruined the Klingons and It's disappointing in general.
  • Nov 13, 2020
The entire Discovery series is a real low point for the Trek franchise. Consistently delivering generic and dumb sci-fi.
  • Nov 12, 2020
This feels like a return to form, really enjoying the season so far!
  • Nov 12, 2020
Absolutely brilliant! I have really enjoyed the three series and the evolution of the characters. It is Star Trek at it finest
