The Haunting of Bly Manor

Critics Consensus

It may not be as scary as its predecessor, but with plenty of spooky tricks inside its haunted halls and a strong sense of heart, The Haunting of Bly Manor is another solid entry into Mike Flanagan's growing horrorography.

Critic Reviews for The Haunting of Bly Manor Miniseries

"Bly Manor" stands as an ambitious blend of genres and arrives at its ultimate point with proper gravity. It's not a great ghost story, it's not a great love story, but it's still haunting enough to hear out.

So no, Bly Manor isn't as chilling as Hill House, but it is ultimately a good deal more satisfying, and it whets the appetite for any future installments.

I'm all for patient storytelling, asking the audience to do a little work to get to the payoff. But "The Haunting of Bly Manor" takes that to extremes. Patience is a virtue. Here it's a chore.

In its attempt to escape the shadow of Hill House, Bly Manor takes a misguided pivot into gothic soap opera, stranding its performers and fans in the process.

There is a lot of explanatory talk, taking away the subtlety of Henry James's stories. Still, if a distracting, longwinded spooky story is what entertains you now, you've got that, right here.

While you may go into watching Haunting of Bly Manor for the ghosts and potential horror aspect, the reality is that this is a beautiful, dark gothic story of love and loss.

The season does what Mike Flannagan and his team does best: takes a ghost story and seamlessly weaves a love story into it.

Even though it doesn't reach the heights of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor is still a grim and entertaining ghost tale with a talented cast, grat direction and flawless aesthetics.

There certainly aren't any traditionally happy endings in The Haunting of Bly Manor. That said, as Flanagan wraps around to the season finale, he is keen to pull you back up.

Audience Reviews for The Haunting of Bly Manor: Miniseries

The Haunting of Bly Manor is not the scariest when compared to the original series, but it does offer a complex puzzle to unravel. This season is slow but it ramps up around episode 5 and that's when the answers begin. I get the slow comments by audiences but the original season had its slow story beats and this show is a nice change from something like American Horror Story. 21/10/2020

Boring and slow. Unlikable characters in a ghost series with no ghosts. It's a chore to watch. I'm giving it 2 stars because some of the acting is decent and the settings are nice to look at.

Loved this season so much. Hope there will be a third season of the show.

Une des pires histoires de tous les temps

Good start, good middle, acting, set, storyline... It would've gotten four stars but last two episodes ruined it. One before last, the 17th century story about two sisters - characters seem a bit forced - they wanted to create powerful female characters by making them mean and arrogant to others, that's lazy writing. By the end it turned out to be an 80's cheesy melodrama about love. Also where was all the scares, blood, gore, action, literally anything exciting? It did bore me to DEATH, so yeah it is a HORROR I guess.

The very reason the words "tedious", "dull" and "boring" were invented. I'm all for a well paced pressure cooker, but this snoozefest never moved from park to drive. Relentlessly dull and an utter waste of time. The sets were the only thing that kept me even slightly interested.

It went on way too long. It could have been ok, but it seemed like they only had enough content for 4 episodes but needed to make it ten. Really, it was excruciating.

    Long, slow and boring.

This series was a waste of my time that will haunt me for years to come. "The haunting of hill house" is one of the most amazing episodic series I've ever seen, so to my surprise I was shocked to find that second installment of this anthology franchise fell so short. I found myself bored, un-frightened, the script severely over-written and confusing for no good reason, and somehow it was also incredibly predictable. The only thing that deserves a star is the set, which was beautifully done and the acting was also notably authentic and well constructed. This was a swing and a miss for me.

Can the last 2 episodes of a 9 episode series save a ghost story? In the case of Bly, they cannot, but those last 2 episodes are perfectly splendid! A superb cast and another lovely house that one could only dream of living and getting lost in, whether it be this century or last, is where I land upon the 3 star rating. The lack of any explaination for most things happening and later on 'dream skipping' or whatever they called it really gets the story coming to a stall around episode 5. At 6 we have a glimmer of 'wtf was that!?!?!?' - and again, that moment is fantastic. At 7 we are back to "where is this even going?" Which is sad, because perhaps if told differently, this story could definitely get a 5 star rating.
