The Undoing: Season 1 (2020)

Season 1
The Undoing

Critics Consensus

The Undoing is a beautifully shot mystery that benefits greatly from Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant's performances - if only its story was as strong as its star power.

Critic Reviews for The Undoing Season 1

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (34)

No matter how much you crave kitchen islands, beige cashmere and Central Park in the snow, I'd be willing to bet you won't want to keep watching The Undoing beyond episode two.

Nov 4, 2020 | Full Review…

Again, from the first episode at least, it appears to be about deceit and the way it can create serious delusions beyond our control, often with heartbreaking consequences.

Oct 26, 2020 | Full Review…

"The Undoing" is somewhat undone by its dawdling pace.

Guided by Susanne Bier's taut direction, the twists keep coming and nothing is quite what it seems.

Oct 23, 2020 | Full Review…

I'm not going to say any more about what happens in "The Undoing." I don't want to give it away. But Nicole Kidman at the center of it all delivers one of the best and most nuanced roles of her entire career.

It's fun to watch Grant in action, dodging our presumptions about his character. Kidman is good, too, if a bit distractingly waxen.

Oct 21, 2020 | Full Review…

The power of Kidman's performance is her ability to shift among multiple selves... Kidman communicates the changes in Grace through everything from speech to body language to appearance. It's a masterful performance.

Nov 20, 2020 | Full Review…

The Undoing is smart, slick, guilt-free TV.

Nov 10, 2020 | Full Review…

The Undoing feels old fashioned in construction but somehow skirts close to contemporary without seeming to try, offering up solid entertainment from a killer cast.

Nov 5, 2020 | Full Review…

I'm certainly obsessed with the apartments, the furniture, the wardrobes which are not so much walk-in as yomp-around and the crimson walls of Grace's place.

Nov 2, 2020 | Full Review…

It's Kidman who is most impressive, though. She has already delivered one of the best performances of her career in the first two episodes of The Undoing, with Kelley's material clearly getting the most out of her once again.

Nov 2, 2020 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

I'm happy not to provide spoilers, because for once it's not all instantly streamable - but I'm up to episode five (of six) and safe to say still gripped.

Audience Reviews for The Undoing: Season 1

Bewitching. No other word comes close to describing a film that is almost ho-hum to begin with. An illicit affair goes awry when the femme fatale is brutally murdered, and the wandering doctor/husband is accused of the crime and arrested. His wife and son are devastated by such goings on, but the fireworks start when the case goes to trial. Lawyers have a talent for stirring the pot. Edge of the seat excitement. Kidman and Grant look grandly chic.

Another series that is fascinating and repellent at once - an anthropological study of inexplicable beings in an alien culture of the ultra-rich, self-centered, cruel and idle. Your mind shifts between the negligible story and the horrifying social milieu. Nicole Kidman's character wears many many expensive coats, a hair and makeup artist and stylist apparently living in her closet even during her highly personal crisis. The many many many close up shots disconcertingly juxtapose Hugh Grant's naturally aging comfortable face made of skin with Nicole Kidman's unlined & scary face of carved marble. I give it three stars because it's impossible to look away, despite your better instincts telling you to do so. That, in itself, is some kind of modern premium TV art.

Keeps you guessing all the way through, the cast is very good.

Beautiful cinematography and good acting by Kidman and Grant, but the writing in this series is a road full of plot-holes. That kid is annoying.

Starts promising but it spins a good yarn.
  • Nov 18, 2020
It keeps you on the edge of your seat through all episodes!
  • Nov 17, 2020
That's not very good. These Nicole Kidman series start to look more and more alike. she always plays the same character. She has the same behavior and attitude as in real life. Being likeable is not the only and best premise for being a good actress. She has not depth. Compared to The Queen's gambit and Anya Taylor this is kind of embarrassing for both her and Hugh Grant. In 20 year they will look a this the same way we look at melodramas from the 90's. Fake and Pompous.

Gripping, smart, very quietly witty and satirical, urbane, realistically drawn depiction of Upper East Side Manhattan, filled with ambiguity--a compelling mystery with a terrific cast. Four episodes into the season and have found it gripping and enjoyable. So happy there's a new series of this quality on HBO right now. Everyone I've mentioned it to has loved it as much as I have.

Beautifully filmed, excellent acting and very nicely written. Keeps you wanting more!

I've only seen a few episodes, but the show continues to surprise me - and that's a good thing. Kidman and Grant are terrific in their roles. I like a show that makes me want to discuss each episode afterward and try to figure out which way it's going to go. Also I'm enjoying the New York locations and Kidman's wardrobe!
