Critics Consensus

World Beyond's strong performances and new perspective within The Walking Dead universe aren't enough to make it stand out in an increasingly crowded franchise.

Critic Reviews for The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 1

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (8)

That's the big problem with "World Beyond." Its drama feels contrived and manufactured, less born of characters bouncing off of each other and more "we gotta fill time on this new spinoff."

For all its interest in youth, it just feels tired.

Even if they're fitting thoughts for the present circumstances, it's a hell of a lot of speechifying. And that's World Beyond in its opening hour: a lot of talk, and not much to show for it.

My Walking Dead enthusiasm tank is running on empty. The mothership, even with its end in sight, is on notice.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is a minor excursion, feeling too much like the Disney Channel version of a zombie show, minus the catchy songs.

Really, was anyone asking for this? Teenagers already have their own Walking Dead show, which is called The Walking Dead.

Oct 2, 2020 | Rating: C | Full Review…

Corny and boring. World Beyond, at least in its series premiere, is a snoozefest filled with (mostly) uninteresting characters who will likely appeal more to a younger audience than yours truly.

Oct 5, 2020 | Full Review…

It's a likable-enough exploration of a generation that grew up in an apocalypse. As an entry point episode for a decade-long franchise spinoff, though, it meanders too much and lacks energy.

Oct 5, 2020 | Rating: 6/10 | Full Review…

If you still like The Walking Dead, World Beyond sets up a new zombie survival story faithfully. It won't win any new fans, but 10 years into the series, they're not exactly hurting for viewers either.

Oct 4, 2020 | Full Review…

The high-stakes battles with walkers have been replaced by teens traversing a wasteland that does not seem as scary as it did with adults at the helm.

Sep 30, 2020 | Rating: 1.5/5 | Full Review…

while there are some interesting characters on "World Beyond," I'd be lying if I didn't say this new show feels like a placeholder until the first Rick Grimes movie(s) comes along at some point.

Sep 27, 2020 | Rating: C | Full Review…

What makes it work is that it's still a coming of age story with engaging characters, and it's still full of gross, innovative zombies from effects guru Greg Nicotero and his team.

Audience Reviews for The Walking Dead: World Beyond: Season 1

Terrible, terrible, terrible, I am Team Dead , I hope the characters get eaten soon, so we can get a new cast that know how to act. If I wanted to see dick head teens, I would spend time with my daughter's friends. Kill off the cast, start again

First off, let me say that I'm a huge fan of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. They have excellent cinematography, acting, and scriptwriting. I was hoping for the same with World Beyond. Alas, World Beyond is a total mess! The cinematography is uneven, the acting is abysmal, and the scriptwriting is horrid! I wanted to like it. I DVR'd the first three episodes. I watched the first one entirely. Boring. I watched the second episode but had to fast forward to see if it would get more interesting. Nope. I deleted the third episode and canceled future recordings. I'm done with this hot mess! The zombies appear out of nowhere in open spaces for shock value. The teen group sets off to travel many miles to find their dad with no skills or intelligence. The lead actress is carrying a 14-pound bowling ball! You can noticeably see their boy scout style canteens dangling in the wind. Meaning they are empty and are for visuals only! This is bad TV. I'm mean really bad TV! Avoid at all costs. I'm rooting for the zombies in this one!

Just horrible, everything is bad in that show, the direction, the actuations and all the rest. It's clearly just to make money

Bad acting, annoying characters and boring storylines... should've kept this one... messing up the franchise!

Unbelievably boring. Just really, really bad. Huge TWD fan. Had such high hopes for this show. The first two episodes were basically unwatchable.

Boring, characters are annoying and really can't act

they need to revitalize the theme, and the plot, mostly the flow as well. I can still hear Gumball from Cantu.
  • 2d ago
Flat performances from shallow actors, low budget, awful direction, cringe-worthy shoehorning of outdated social issues to virtue signal and generally poor dialogue throughout, asinine flashback structuring, very little knowledge of the zombie genre. Every aspect of this show is awful.

Awful from the beginning. Slow paced. Boring. Preachy. Uninteresting characters with baffling motives to do what they do. You find yourself rooting for the Walkers.

The cast is just plain annoying and I love all the other walking dead series
